Sacrifice and the tradition
What does UDHIYAH/QURBANi mean to us?
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah upon him) was asked, "What is Qurbani (Udhiyah)?" and he replied, "It is the Sunnah of your Father Abraham (Ibrahim). For every hair of the sacrificed animal you receive a reward from your Lord (Tirmidhi).
Eid-ul-Adha is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Abraham (Ibrahim) to sacrifice his son Ishmael (Isma'il) as an act of obedience to Allah, but instead was able to sacrifice a ram (by God's command). By following the tradition of Udhiyah/Qurbani muslims reflect upon the ultimate sacrifice of a father and a son, (peace and blessings be upon them) exemplifying complete submission to the Will of God. We are reminded to follow in their footsteps.
